Sri Lankan Twin Registry

“If you are a twin, we would like to invite you to join the Sri Lankan Twin Registry.”

The Sri Lankan Twin registry established in 1996 is the first ever twin register in South Asia. It is still one the of few large scale functional population based twin registries in developing world (The continuing value of twin studies in the omics era).

Two main twin cohorts are volunteer and population based. The population based twin register is presently confined to Colombo district; the most populous among the 25 administrative districts of Sri Lanka. It has 9570 twin pairs and 46 triplets (19278 individuals). The volunteer cohort has 7000 twin pairs and 86 triplets (14258 individuals).

Sri Lankan Twin Registry was funded by four research grants, five ethics grants, one community engagement grant from the Wellcome Trust Wellcome and, two research grants and one community engagement grant from the the Medical Research Council UK. Trust and tis a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. These two Trusts, support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities. Such support includes public engagement, education and the application of research to improve health. These charitable research trusts are independent of both political and commercial interests.
